| Success Story - Joanne Tate |

Joanne Tate left school with no academic qualifications and, as a lone parent looking after a severely autistic child, never thought she'd have the time to get any. Joanne attended a careers day for lone parents and met Learning Links Europe advisor Steven Winterburn, who talked her through what was available. Joanne comments: “I was nervous about attending the careers event but looking back now, I'm so glad I did. As soon as I heard about the programmes Learning Links Europe offered I knew I wanted to get involved. “Steven and I set a date so that I could visit the centre and find out more about which course was the right one for me. “I loved the environment and was given the opportunity to meet the rest of the Learning Links Europe team – who were all lovely and willing to help. “I completed an IAG assessment and enrolled on a literacy course. My main concern was that I would need to fit my learning in around looking after my son who has autism. But, the course structure meant that I could learn at my own pace, at a time to suit me and I couldn't get into the centre I was able to do some of my work at home knowing that the tutors were only a phone call away.” Joanne passed at Level 2 in literacy and in June, the Learning Links Europe team put her forward for an outstanding learner award with learndirect. Joanne continues: “I was thrilled to be nominated! I didn't win the award but just knowing that the team had so much faith in me filled me with confidence.” Learning Links Europe advisor Steven Winterburn says of Joanne: “Jo is a woman who should be admired for her ability to keep on trying even when times get tough. Her personality and strength of character shines through and it has been a real pleasure to work with someone so committed.” Pictured: Joanne Tate (centre) with IAG advisor Elaine Finlayson (left) and learner support worker Melissa Merryweather (right). |
